Easily Remove Hammers and Bits from Pipes

Many horizontal directional drilling (HDD) rigs are equipped with on-board hydraulic units that assist in make up and break out, but there are limitations to these on-board machines. Pipes can get stuck above the hydraulic unit. Hydraulic tongs, like the Scorpion 800 series, are compact enough to fit in such areas which commonly have limited space, yet can product enough torque to break the stuck pipes.

Another situation in which hydraulic tongs can help is when drilling under a body of water or other non-traversible terrain. The HDD rig cannot cross this area so workers typically use pipe wrenches or other tools to break the hammer out. The amount of pressure exerted on the tools when using these methods commonly causes wrenches, chains, and other equipment to "explode" or be ejected at high speeds, creating an extremely dangerous situation for workers. Just the soil that can be forced out when breaking out pipes and hammers in the field has enough force and velocity to cause injuries and fatalities. Hydraulic tongs can perform the break out process safely and in minutes. Scorpion's hydraulic tongs are portable, powerful, and easy to move to the area where breaking out needs to be performed.
